The collection upgrade is a result of the library’s participation in the Libros for Oregon program. Libros for Oregon (LfO) is a project that sends representatives to the Guadalajara Book Fair annually on behalf of partnering Oregon public and school libraries to buy culturally appropriate books for their collections and communities. Participating libraries pool resources to cover the travel costs, and set purchasing parameters based their selection budget and collection needs.
Spanish language materials currently comprise of a little less than 1% of the library’s total print collection. According to US Census data, persons of Hispanic or Latino descent make up approximately 4.7% of  Baker County’s population, and a non-English language is spoken in 4.1% of households.
For beginning readers, the library also has hundreds of picture books in Spanish as well as bi-lingual books in Spanish-English. The collection is an excellent resource both for native Spanish speakers and anyone new to learning or relearning the language.
With Interlibrary Loan service from Sage Library partners, thousands more items are available. Spanish language materials can be viewed on the library catalog by using the language filter on the Advanced Search page.

Purchase requests for language study resources or other materials are invited through the library’s website under the Contact Us tab at https://bakerlib.specialdistrict.org/ .
